Overview

At The Nursing Centre, we understand that the role of the Preceptor is challenging BUT vitally important in its impact of the future nursing workforce.  And that's why we're taking a special interest in providing unique developmental programs that focus on ongoing development for nurses who act as Preceptors.

All nurses have a professional responsibility to foster the next nursing workforce - indeed this is part of the overall nursing competencies.  Nursing preceptors who engage with student nurses, graduate nurses, re-entry nurses, and peer learners play an important role in fostering how the future nursing workforce experiences nursing and are key in how new nurses gain their nursing competencies.  Nursing leadership programs are often focussed on nurses who hold 'titled' leadership positions; however, nursing preceptors are also nursing leaders and the Preceptor Development Workshop acknowledges this important developmental activity.

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the leadership and public relations role of the preceptor
  • Understand the role of key nursing competencies and standards and their relationship to the preceptor role
  • Create an environment conducive to learning in the preceptor role
  • Identify and apply effective preceptor attributes
  • Apply theory to action in problem based learning scenarios to improve your ability to manage common scenarios in the preceptor role.

Participants at a recent Preceptor Development Workshop said:

  • 'I feel well informed and more confident re my role as a preceptor.'
  • 'Great workshop!'
  • 'Gilly was fantastic - so informative and knowledgeable yet no dictating or too authoritative.'
  • 'Information and documents provided are very useful and interesting.'
  • 'Fantastic, interesting, well presented, great resource file - thanks so much.'

Additionally, participants are provided with access to contemporary Australian research in nursing competency models, including the Ascent to Competence Model by Dr Tracy Levett-Jones of the University of Newcastle, the world-wide leadership framework, Examplery Leadership by Kouzes & Posner, and to a wide variety of related thinking, case studies and challenges.

The Preceptor Development Workshop is not a clinical program.  It is designed to compliment other forms of preceptor development which have a focus on mainstream training/supervision and clinical skills.

Additionally, this workshop attracts continuing nursing education points and ALL participants become part of The Nursing Centre's Preceptor Network. Members of the Preceptor Network will be kept up to date with new tools and resources to support the preceptor role, and have the opportunity to test, trial and be part of the development process.
